It has been a year since I start working in a government hospital under DOH. Though i am not looking for a long term career as a civil servant I am enjoying my stay as I was able to learn a lot and it was an eye opener for me with the current state of the Philippines health care system.
From the long lines of the out patient department that start at dawn, to the long working hours of the health care professionals, unpaid internship of post-grad interns, doctors not going into residency or changing careers because of being overwork, seniority and medical culture in the country, to the lack of funds on maintenance and facilities needed in building a strong healthcare system. There is really a need to address this problems if we want the Universal Health to be successful.
One of the best training I get working here that is close to my heart is the Basic Life Support (BLS) as my brother died of sudden cardiac arrest falling short of his 14th birthday. Looking back if I had this kind of knowledge back then it may have turned into different outcome. The time we spent bringing him to the hospital should be the time spent we keep doing CPR the result may have turned differently. I wish that we should just request AED or hopefully the Brgy. should have one, my brother should be alive right now playing basketball or hiking with me but i guess time stops for no one "Life moves forward for better or for worst". I am glad being able to learn new things despite not being a student of any institution, True enough the world itself is the biggest classroom and life is the best teacher.
